Xpeng X9: Distinctive electric people mover nears Australian launch

    The seven-seat Xpeng X9 electric people mover is coming to Australia, and government filings have revealed the Zeekr 009 and Denza D9 rival will be offered here exclusively with electric power.

    The X9 was the first model from the Chinese automaker to be offered as an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) in its home market, but that powertrain doesn’t appear to be on the cards for Australia.

    Xpeng ANZ recently confirmed it expects to share pricing and specifications on the X9 and updated G6 before the end of June.

    The brand’s previous distributor, TrueEV, had confirmed the X9, as well as an updated Tesla Model Y-rivalling G6 SUV, however Xpeng and TrueEV are now locked in an Australian Federal Court battle over local distribution rights.

    The local filings reveal the X9 in local specification measures 5316mm long, 1988mm wide and 1788mm tall, on a 3160mm wheelbase – similar in size to the Zeekr 009 already on sale here, and the upcoming Denza D9.

    Two model grades are part of the filing: the X9 Standard Range and X9 Long Range, each offered in front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) and with electric power.

    Running an 800-volt electrical architecture, FWD models will be powered by a single 255kW motor, while AWD versions add a 140kW rear axle motor for a combined 355kW.

    Further Australian details are yet to be confirmed, but Chinese-market X9s have similar outputs and use 94.8kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and 110kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery packs with ranges between 665km (CLTC) and 750km (CLTC).

    Impacting range, lower-spec Chinese versions are offered with 19-inch wheels, while Australian filings reveal 20-inch alloys will be the only size fitted here.

    Fast charging allows a 400km (CLTC) battery top-up in just under 12 minutes, while vehicle-to-load (V2L) output is rated at 6kW.

    The chassis on Chinese versions runs air suspension and includes rear-wheel steering.

    The seven-seat cabin can be accessed by sliding doors on both sides of the vehicle, and includes standard leather upholstery, with genuine Nappa leather optional and with ‘zero-gravity space seats’ in the second row featuring one-click entry and ‘lying and sitting posture’, as well as a massage function.

    Alongside real wood and a microfibre suede-style roof lining, the dashboard features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display and a 17.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system. There’s an even bigger 21.4-inch ‘home entertainment’ screen in the second row.

    Cabin functions are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, while driver assistance systems use a Turing AI chip working with radar, ultrasonic sensors and cameras.

    Xpeng’s lineup in China is rapidly expanding, with the recently revealed in Chinese government certification filings.

    The Australian lineup, with the G6 currently its only model, is also set to expand further, with the company saying it’s considering the G9L SUV – offered in EREV and EV forms – and the P7 electric sedan for local showrooms.
