For most of us, buying a new home or a new car are likely to be the most significant purchases in our lives.

Both are an investment in the comfort and wellbeing of your family, and require smart long-term thinking in terms of space, features and maintenance costs.

So, if you’re in the market for a new home for your growing family, it’s also the perfect time to give the driveway a glow-up with a new car.

And here’s why the new 2026 Honda CR-V is the smart choice for new homeowners.

    Room to grow

The Honda CR-V is among the best models in the mid-size SUV class when it comes to interior space and comes loaded with thoughtful practicalities throughout its cabin.

Measuring 4704mm in length and riding on a 2700mm wheelbase, the CR-V provides generous headroom and legroom for all occupants, especially those in the second row with over 1000mm of legroom in five-seat model variants.

And, uniquely, if you need more, the CR-V is one of only a handful of cars in this category to be available with a third row of seats in the VTi-L7 variant.

Plus, there’s a cavernous boot (with up to 589 litres of cargo carrying capacity) that can handle everyday family activities, and expands to 1671L with the rear seatbacks folded down, which is enough to carry large items like new furnishings or renovation materials for your new home.

Conveniently, all CR-V models are equipped with a power-operated tailgate that makes accessing the boot even easier.

    Built for families

Honda has designed the CR-V with a family-first philosophy, ensuring that all occupants have the same level of comfort, convenience and safety.

Apart from the generous level of interior space that provides for back-seat passengers, all CR-V variants are equipped with dual-zone climate control with adjustable rear air vents, a flip-down centre armrest with additional cupholders, and rear USB-C power outlets.

The VTi-L7 has a tri-zone system with separate controls for the rearmost section and additional air vents for those in the third row.

The range-topping CR-V e:HEV RS even has heated outboard rear seats, and for those with new children, there are two ISOFIX child seat anchors and three top-tether attachment points across the second row.

    Safe as houses

Safety is just as important when buying a new home as it is when buying a new car, and the CR-V is at the cutting edge of new technologies.

All model variants are equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced collision-avoidance systems and autonomous driver aids under the banner of Honda Sensing technology, including automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, traffic sign recognition, and blind-spot detection.

On top of that, the cabin features 10 airbags that provide protection for all occupants, even in the third row of the seven-seat VTi-L7.

All CR-Vs come with a reverse parking display and both front and rear parking sensors, with the highest-grade Hybrid variants (the e:HEV L, e:HEV LX and e:HEV RS) adding a 360-degree surround-view monitor.

And, lastly, all variants are fitted with Honda Connect, which allows owners remote access to certain functions via a smartphone app, such as locking and unlocking the doors, sounding the horn and alarm, and activating the climate control to cool down or warm up the cabin before you set off.

You can also find the exact location of your vehicle and monitor its vital statistics remotely, and use your phone as a digital key.

Owners can also set geofence and speed limits if anyone else is using their car, and the system will notify them if these restrictions have been breached.

But, most importantly, Honda Connect will detect if the vehicle has been involved in a serious collision and notify the Honda help centre, which can then assist emergency services if required.

New owners are given a complimentary three-year subscription to Honda Connect when purchasing a CR-V.

    Cost of living

When considering a new home, you have to take into account how much it will cost to run, including everything from heating/cooling and council rates to water bills and general maintenance. The more efficient the better, right?

The same principle should apply when choosing a family car too. And that’s where the Honda CR-V becomes the smart choice.

A key element of the 2026 CR-V update is the broader availability of its cutting-edge hybrid powertrain, which pairs a lean-burning four-cylinder petrol engine with a CVT automatic transmission that features two in-built electric motors.

Four out of the six model variants are offered with the e:HEV system, with prices starting at $49,900 drive-away for the e:HEV X and topping out at $64,900 drive-away for the flagship e:HEV RS.

The e:HEV X and e:HEV L are both front-wheel drive, while the e:HEV LX and e:HEV RS introduce all-wheel drive to the hybrid CR-V range for the first time.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine and electric motors produce combined maximum outputs of 135kW and 335Nm, and deliver claimed average fuel consumption figures of 5.5L/100km in two-wheel drive versions and 5.7L/100km with all-wheel drive.

With a 57-litre fuel tank that requires the most affordable 91-octane unleaded, hybrid versions of the CR-V have a theoretical driving range of 1000km between refills.

At the entry point to the CR-V range, the five-seat VTi-X (which costs $44,900 drive-away) and the seven-seat VTi-L7 (which costs $54,900 drive-away) are powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine generating 140kW of power and 240Nm of torque, with combined fuel consumption of 7.1L/100km and 7.3L/100km respectively.

Whichever engine option you choose, the CR-V is ultra-efficient to run.

But, more significantly, it is among the most affordable to maintain with a capped-price service plan that limits the first five workshop visits to just $199 each, saving you thousands of dollars in upkeep compared to some of its rivals.

    Quality and reliability

Unless you’re looking for a home to renovate, you don’t want to buy a house that isn’t built right and for unexpected problems to show up. That’s a money pit you might not be able to afford in the long run.

Which is why quality craftsmanship and design are so important, whether that’s within your four walls or on four wheels.

Honda is renowned for its engineering excellence and robust build quality across all of its models, and has an enviable reputation for reliability and durability.

The latest-generation CR-V is no exception to this rule, in terms of the comfort and quality of the materials used within the cabin, the electronics behind its array of digital conveniences and, most convincingly, the way it drives.

The CR-V sets the benchmark in its class for refinement in its dynamic character. It is smooth, quiet and surefooted on the road, with positive steering, natural braking feel, and a suspension setup that neatly balances compliance with cornering confidence.

The active safety systems are also among the best in the business in terms of how well calibrated they are, providing unobtrusive assistance where necessary but otherwise remaining invisible in the background.

So there are plenty of reasons why the 2026 Honda CR-V is the smart choice for families looking to upgrade their ride when buying a new home.
