2026 Jaecoo J5 prices: Chery’s “step up” brand offers its cheapest petrol-powered model yet

The Jaecoo J5 is gaining more affordable petrol-powered variants in Australia, after customer deliveries commenced for its electric counterpart earlier this year.

Petrol-powered versions of the small SUV, which are due in showrooms in June 2026, use a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 108kW of power and 210Nm of torque, mated with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Claimed fuel consumption is 7.5L/100km.

Though not marketed as a premium brand, Omoda Jaecoo has been referred to as being a “step up” from parent Chery’s namesake brand here.

Despite this, the base Jaecoo J5 Track is priced at $25,990 drive-away. That makes it one of the most affordable small SUVs in Australia, though it’s still $2000 more than the most affordable Chery Tiggo 4.

It takes on the GWM Haval Jolion (currently priced from $24,990 drive-away) and GAC Emzoom ($25,590 before on-road costs).

The base Jaecoo J5 Track comes standard with the following equipment:

    • 18-inch alloy wheels
    • Automatic projector LED headlights
    • Automatic high-beam
    • Rain-sensing wipers
    • Remote start
    • Push-button start
    • 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster
    • 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system
    • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
    • 6-speaker sound system
    • ‘Premium’ steering wheel
    • Cloth upholstery
    • 6-way manually adjustable front seats

There’s also a comprehensive suite of active safety and driver assist technology, including adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera.

The Summit, priced at $29,990 drive-away, adds:

    • Fixed panoramic glass roof with power sunshade
    • Power tailgate
    • Dual-zone climate control
    • 8-speaker sound system
    • 50W wireless phone charger
    • Leatherette upholstery
    • 6-way power-adjustable front seats
    • Heated and ventilated front seats
    • Colour-adjustable front ambient lighting
    • Rear centre armrest with cupholders
    • Soft-touch dashboard and upper front door trim

Alpine Green is the standard exterior finish, with Stormy Blue, Arctic White and Carbon Black exterior paint colours being optional.

The new petrol variants are much cheaper than the Jaecoo J5 EV, which is currently being offered only in Summit trim with a price tag of $36,990 drive-away.

The petrol J5s are distinguished from their EV sibling through a ‘waterfall’ grille, like that seen on the larger Jaecoo J7 and J8, as well as unique 18-inch alloy wheels.

All J5s, whether petrol or electric, are front-wheel drive. If you want all-wheel drive in an Omoda Jaecoo vehicle, you’ll need to step up to the Jaecoo J7 or J8, or the Omoda 9.

It’s unclear why Omoda Jaecoo uses the Track nomenclature for a base variant with neither a performance nor off-road focus, but then again the most affordable Kia Picanto is called the ‘Sport’…

All Omoda Jaecoos are backed by an eight-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, with eight years of capped-price servicing and roadside assistance.

The Jaecoo J5 could prove a thorn in the side for the Chery brand, as its Tiggo 4 battles to hold onto the top position in the small SUV sales race against tough competition from the GWM Haval Jolion and Hyundai Kona.

As Chery rolls out ever more brands in Australia, the J5 and Tiggo 4 could also get more in-house competition. Lepas is set to launch a small SUV, for example, in 2027.
