The Toyota bZ4X has followed its Subaru Solterra twin in receiving massive price cuts, coinciding with a major update for the mid-size electric SUV.

The entry-level single-motor front-wheel drive version of Toyota Australia’s first electric vehicle (EV) is now priced at $55,990 before on-road costs, a reduction of $10,010, while the dual-motor all-wheel drive flagship now costs $67,990 plus on-roads – down $6910. The updated range is now on sale.

Toyota’s move follows price cuts by Subaru for the updated Solterra of between $6000 and $7000.

The huge price cuts come despite the updated bZ4X featuring more power, a longer range and extra standard equipment, among other improvements.

Both FWD and AWD variants get a new 74.7kWh lithium-ion battery and more powerful electric motors.

Here’s how the updated bZ4X stacks up:

    bZ4X 2WD bZ4X AWD
    Power 165kW (+15kW) 252kW (+92kW)
    Torque 268.6Nm (+2.6Nm) 438Nm (+101Nm)
    Range (WLTP) 591km (+155km) 517km (+106km)
AC charge rate 22kW (up from 11kW) 22kW (up from 11kW)
    DC charge rate 150kW 150kW

The AWD variant’s braked towing capacity has also been doubled, to 1500kg.

The bZ4X features revised exterior styling comprising a version of Toyota’s latest ‘hammerhead’ family face.

The base bZ4X 2WD gains new-design 18-inch alloy wheels, as well as roof rails, puddle lights, headlight cleaners, and gloss black wheel-arches.

Inside, there’s a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen (up from 12.3 inches), while other new inclusions comprise paddle shifters, two wireless phone chargers, a heated steering wheel, a hands-free power tailgate, and a 1500W inverter in the luggage area to power small appliances.

Additional safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit assist and a surround-view camera, all previously exclusive to the bZ4X AWD. A driver monitoring camera has also been added.

The bZ4X AWD gets new-look 20-inch alloy wheels.

Premium paint is a $595 option across the range, and the AWD is also available with a two-tone exterior finish for $1350.

Not only has Toyota slashed prices and – in the case of the FWD – added kit, but it’s also offering private buyers the choice of a free 7kW Jet Charge home charger or a one-year/625kWh Chargefox voucher between now and the end of 2026 through the Toyota Go loyalty program.

Toyota is also offering a “limited-time deposit contribution” of $5000 for the bZ4X 2WD and $7500 for the AWD, for private customers who choose to finance their bZ4X through Toyota Finance Australia.

The Japanese brand said in July 2024 it had no plans to slash bZ4X prices despite slow sales.

After saying in August 2023 it expected to deliver several thousand bZ4Xs last year, by 2024 Toyota Australia had lowered its official target to just 1500 annual sales.

“It’s a difficult proposition for people that have bought a car, and then you wind it back not once, not twice, but three times – I think that is not a good practice, and not a practice Toyota will be going down,” said Toyota Australia vice president of sales, marketing and franchise operations Sean Hanley in September 2024.

“That erodes confidence and trust, and we pride ourselves on the trust we’ve built.

“Reducing pricing or putting massive incentives on is the laziest option first up. Build trust and knowledge, it works 100 per cent of the time… there’s no easy way. There’s quick ways that’ll give you a short-term hit, but that’s all they’ll be, a short-term hit.”

Toyota Australia ended up delivering just 977 bZ4Xs in 2024.

The bZ4X will be joined in local showrooms in the second quarter of 2026 by the bZ4X Touring, which has a more traditional wagon body. Subaru’s version, the Trailseeker, has yet to be confirmed for our market.
